Around the House

I would say that my decorating style is eclectic.

The most important thing for me is that the items in my house have meaning. I don't want 'things' just for the sake of having them. I like to surround myself in memories.

Here are a few of my favourites.

A water bottle from Spain. While Nick and I were driving along the Costa del Sol, we stopped for lunch at a pretty little cafe. I ordered water and it came in such a beautiful bottle, that after I finished drinking it, I stashed it in my purse. I felt like a weirdo (I'm sure no one else in the cafe would have done that), but now I have the memory and it works as a vase for a single flower.

A toast holder from my grandparents. My grandparents were from Liverpool, and had a few English traditions that they carried on, long after immigrating to Canada. They kept this toast holder in the kitchen (and they used it). Now, I use it for holding mail.

Postcards from the Guinness Brewery in Dublin. My mom always makes sure to buy postcards when she travels and she's passed that habit onto me. While we were in Dublin, I was in love with the advertising/marketing exhibit in the Guinness Brewery, so we decided to pick some postcards with the classic Guinness ads.

A toy car, made by Nick's Granddad and watercolour of Nick's family's home in England, lovingly painted by his mum. I'm a huge fan of displaying things on shelves, and both of these items are front and center in our family room. It doesn't hurt to have family members who can create such wonderful things.

Do you like to display memories around your space? What sort of things do you use to decorate with?
